The following section will define some of the key terminology used throughout the course. Please revisit this section if you are unsure about any of the terms used in any of the sections.
Composite: The process of taking multiple images and layering them on top of each other to form a composite.
Composition (framing): The area in which the subject or elements of the image fit within the frame.
Brackets (Bracketing): The process of taking multiple photographs of the same frame, all shot at different exposures. For example, taking a photo of the shadows in the shot, then one of the mid-range lighting in the frame followed by a final photograph of the highlights.
Hot Shoe: A hot shoe is a mounting point on the top of a camera to attach flashlight units and other compatible accessories.
Image Format: The image format is the type of file your camera will create, such as a JPEG, or as required by this course, a RAW format.
Exposure: Exposure is how much light reaches your camera’s sensor.
Exposure Meter: A meter that measures how much light is coming through the lens at the chosen shutter speed.
Shutter Speed: How quickly the eye of the camera will blink.
